Upload website to domain hosting servers using free ftp tool
Get Free FTP Software
FTP stands for file transfer protocol. It is used to upload work to a website
Uploading your pages to our domain hosting servers is easy and free with CoreFTP. Either purchase the fully featured version, or use the free ftp lite version of their FTP software by Core FTP.
Install CoreFTP using the Control Panel Add/Remove function. CoreFTP has been on Windows XP. The program works flawlessly until we added the voice pack. This caused the program to freeze up. Disabling the sound feature restored the program to full functionality.
Change the settings
Before you start the process of setting up your web space for uploading to the web hosting server, you'll need some information. When you purchased your web hosting space you were given an ftp server name.
The ftp server name will be www.sitename.com where site name is your domain name. You are also provided a username, password, and directory for ftp. We do the password over the phone for better server security. The directory name is /public_html when you are using standard non ssl ftp. Please call if you need the details for secure ftp directory name, or just navigate to the public_html directory before uploading. These 4 items will be needed to proceed.
The username password, directories and filenames for your webhosting are case sensitive!
When you have that information in hand, start CoreFTP.
When the CoreFTP opens there are 2 windows. The front window is the Site Manager.
Step #1
To set up your website for transfers we need to add your ftp server information in the appropriate boxes. We'll start by clicking New Site, which is located bottom left of the window. Site Name is just a placeholder for your information. ftp.yoursite.com goes in the box marked Host/IP/URL. Username and Password go in their respective boxes.
Connecting your website to the webhosting server
To Connect to your website,
1... Log On to the internet using your normal procedures.
2...Highlight the Site Name in the left window of the Site Manager frame.
3...Click Connect (Bottom)
Uploading Your Website to the web hosting servers
CoreFTP Connected
When you click Connect on the Site Manager screen, the screen shown below comes to the front and CoreFTP connects to your website to the web hosting servers. (If you entered all the information correctly). Local files and directories on your PC appear in the left window. Website files and directories on the internet appear in the right window.
What appears in the right window depends on whether you conected using secure ftp or not.
You might see something like:
public_html
stage_html
develop_html
home_cgi_bin
You might see a blank window, which usually means you are set up to go directly to the public_html directory.
We would have sent you information that tells you where to upload HTML or CGI files to. We recommend using php rather than cgi scripts.
You can manuever thru your directories using the crooked arrow button on the top of each window. To upload to your live site, put your files into the public_html directory.
(Note: We had to add the path manually on the local files the first time we used the program)
There are different ways to upload a file to your website.
Starting out, the easiest way would be:
1...Right Click on the desired file in the left window.
2...Choose Transfer.
You can also set up a double click option or use the queue feature.
The Queue feature is used when you have a long list of files or images to upload or download and you don't want to sit there and do each transfer individually. (Queue is just a list)
When you right click a file, then click Queue you'll see the selected file appear in the bottom left window. Add as many files as you wish, then right click the top selection and choose Transfer.
Read the documentation and explore the program to learn the rest of the features it offers.
